Speaker Chamal Rajapakse has announced that the parliament will meet at 2.00 p.m. on Monday (2) on a request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, the official government news portal said in a statement.
A gazette notification announcing the convening of parliament on Monday has been issued yesterday.
Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dassanayaka has told the media that a special debate on the appointment and removal of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris will be held on Monday.
A heated debate took place in parliament last Friday, when the opposition requested for a debate following Prime Minister Wickremasinghe’s special statement on the ousting of Mohan Peiris from the post of Chief Justice.
The argument over the debate date led the Speaker to suspend the sittings twice and when the lawmakers couldn’t come to an agreement the Speaker adjourned the sittings for the day.
