Court dismisses petition challenging ‘urgent bill’

The Court of Appeals today dismissed a petition seeking an injunction preventing the adoption of the proposed draft bill for amendment to the constitution.
The petition cited that the constitutional amendments require a public referendum and that the procedure for enacting Constitutional amendments as an urgent bill would deprive the citizens an opportunity to express opinion or challenge the law.
However, the judge-bench comprising Justices Vijith malalgoda and A.M.W. Nawaz dismissed the petition based on the grounds that the court has no authority to consider the petition.
