Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena, who came to the spotlight following his alleged involvement in several fraudulent activities, has been released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya released the suspect on a personal bail of Rs. 60 million and a cash bail of Rs. 150,000.
Earlier, the Magistrate too ordered the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) to impound the passport of the former Deputy Minister.
In the ‘B’ report submitted to the court, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed 50 charges against Gunawardena, following his alleged involvement in fraudulent activities as the Chairman of the National Lottery Board and a Deputy Minister since 2006.
