SSP of Jaffna area and Inspector of Police(IP) from Elpitiya have been arrested in connection with the murder of Bernard Jayaratne, 65, a wealthy businessman and owner of Biyagama Village Hotel.

The suspects have been arrested for allegedly abetting the crime by withholding information, Police media division said.

Suranga Jayaratna, the son of slain Bernard Jayaratna, has already confessed to being one of the suspects allegedly involved in the killing.

Two unidentified persons had hacked Jayaratna, who was on his way to the business centre, Dompe on February 20, 2012, to death and fled. The Police arrested one suspect earlier. The victim’s son, Suranga, was arrested on August 19, 2013, following investigations by the CID over his involvement in the murder. On interrogation, he admitted that the other suspect who perpetrated the crime was him, together with the suspect in Police custody.

Investigations revealed that there was a dispute over the distribution of family property among the children. As there had been a risk of losing his portion of the property, Suranga had intended to kill his father.

According to investigations, the murder had been committed by the son with the assistance of his friend W.W. Sudath Wickrama.
