Electing to bat, Australia made 376 for 9 against Sri Lanka in a pool A ODI cricket match of the ICC World Cup here today.

Glenn Maxwell scored the second-fastest hundred in the 40-year history of the World Cup. The hard-hitting batsman narrowly missed out on breaking the World Cup record of 50 balls for a hundred set by Ireland Kevin Brien against England in Bangalore four years ago.

It was also the first time Maxwell had scored a one-day international hundred in his 45 matches at this level. Maxwell was eventually out for 102 when he was caught by Lasith Malinga off Thisara Perera, having faced 53 balls including 10 fours and four sixes.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the crunch World Cup Pool A game against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. The 1996 winners Sri Lanka lead the Aussies by one point in the group standings and a win would clinch second spot in the pool behind leaders New Zealand.

Sri Lanka made three changes, with leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna, batsman Upul Tharanga and all-rounder Sachithra Senanayake coming in for the injured duo Dimuth Karunaratne and Rangana Herath, with Suranga Lakmal also left out. It will be the first time all three will feature in the tournament.
