Sri Lanka Army had decided to extend the general amnesty period offered for Army absentees, enabling them to receive their legal discharge from service.
The amnesty period has been extended until the 25th of April, army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said.
The general amnesty began on April 2 and was initially intended to continue till April 16, 2015. It had proved a major success as a total of 12,060 absentees had reported to their respective Regimental Headquarters for discharge.
The amnesty provided army deserters with the opportunity to directly reach respective Regimental Headquarters and receive their discharge under four categories.
It facilitates the discharge of all officers / other rankers who are absent for more than 6 months by 1 March 2015 after repayment of their financial dues to the Army, if any.
