India hands over 16 Sri Lankan fishermen

India on Saturday handed over 16 Sri Lankan fishermen—arrested for allegedly poaching in the Indian waters—to Sri Lankan authorities, several days after they were ordered released by courts.
The fishermen were handed over to Sri Lankan coast guard on the international waters north of Kankesanturai in the northern Jaffna peninsula at around 7.00am this morning, navy spokesman Commander Indika de Silva said.
The fishermen who were apprehended by Indian authorities after setting out to sea in March and April are reportedly residents of Trincomalee, Chilaw and Devundara.
They are to be handed over to the Northern Province assistant fisheries director, he said.
