Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka, the Department of Government Information said. Lavrov is visiting Sri Lanka on an invitation extended to him by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Ajith P. Perera.
Perera said he invited the Russian Foreign Minister to tour the country when he visited Russia last week for a conference.
The Deputy Foreign Minister said that during Lavrov’s visit to the country, a number of agreements between the two countries will be signed.
The visiting minister is also expected to declare open the new Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov who is fluent in Sinhalese, has been in Sri Lanka from 1972 -1976 as a diplomat of the then Soviet Union. He also visited the island in October 2009 at the invitation of then Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.
