Konasreman Navaratnam and Kalarathy Konasreman have loved each other from the moment they locked eyes as children in Sri Lanka.

Their love story was not so smooth when brutal civil war, armed troops, suicide bombers and a distance of nearly 7000km kept them apart for more than five years.

With tensions between the Tamil people and the Sinhalese, the pair were sent to separate different camps.

They married in 2008 at a registry before Mrs Konasreman fled to India with her nephew.

“There was a scarcity in Sri Lankan for women to live in camps,” Mrs Konasreman said.

She was detained with the threat of sexual harassment and assault looming over the heads of women inside the camp.

Mrs Konasreman was not harmed but was eager to flee to safety.

“I fled my country and escaped from the violence,” she said.

“The war destroyed my belongings, house and everything.

“If I was still there, I would be left without any place to live and have to be in the camp for a while. It would have been very hard.” But Mr Navaratnam remained behind in Sri Lanka. The two briefly reconnected in Singapore in 2011to have a traditional wedding before they had to part ways again. - dailytelegraph.com
