The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the formation of the “United National Front for Good Governance,” which is to contest the upcoming General Election under the UNP’s “Elephant” symbol, was signed at the Temple Trees, today (12).

The United National Party (UNP) yesterday (11) approved the new political alliance at the party’s special convention held at Campbell Park in Borella.

UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickreme and UNP General Secretary Kabir Hasheem signed the MOU on behalf of the UNP.

General Secretary of the National Heritage Party, also known as the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Patali Champika Ranawaka and Chairman of the party, the venerable Athureliya Rathana thero signed the MOU on behalf of the National Heritage Party.

Minister Rajitha Senaratne will contest from the Kalutara electoral district, Arjuna Ranatunga from the Gampaha electoral district while former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka will contest from the Colombo electoral district.  

Accordingly, a new political alliance led by the UNP, under the name of “United National Front for Good Governance,” will contest at the parliamentary election on August 17 with sections of the SLFP and JHU. 

Several prominent figures of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) who had not signed UPFA nominations, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) which was recently rebranded as the United National Front for Good Governance, several civil society organisations as well as certain left-leaning parties are set to join under the UNP’s “elephant” symbol.
