Positive trend of high voter turnout as at 11 am

The voter turnout in Kilinochchi, Matara, Gampaha, and Kandy districts is reported to have exceeded 40 per cent, the Election Returning Office (ERO) said, a short while ago.

 


Voting for the General Election poll began at 7.00 am and will end at 4.00 pm. 

 


Approximately, 40 per cent voter turnout so far has been recorded in Kilinochchi and Matale districts, while 25 to 35 per cent voter turnout reported in Galle, Kalutara, Hambantota, and Vavuniya districts, the ERO added. 

 


As at 10.00 am, 30 per cent voter turnout reported in Matara district, while approximately, 50 per cent voter turnout has been recorded in Gampaha and Kandy districts.

 


Over 6100 candidates from a record 35 political parties and 200 independent groups are vying for 196 parliamentary seats at today’s General Elections. According to the Election Department 15,440,491 people are eligible to vote.
