The General Secretary of the All Ceylon Muslim Congress (ACMC), Y.L.S. Hameed, has been removed from his position while his party membership has also been temporarily cancelled.
The decision was taken by the party leadership due to a breach of discipline, ACMC leader and former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen said, at a press conference in Colombo today.
The ACMC which had contested the recent parliamentary election under the UNP’s elephant symbol and managed to win 3 seats in Parliament, was offered another seat from the UNP National List and the party had named M. H. M. Navavi for that seat.
Incidentally Mr Navavi had contested the General Election from the Puttalam District but suffered a defeat.
Certain members of the ACMC had opposed the decisions of the party leadership to name a defeated candidate for a seat in Parliament through the UNP’s National List, sources told Ada Derana.
