Ex-LTTE cadres hold demonstration at Welikada prison

A group of ex-LTTE cadres has engaged in a demonstration since this morning (12) at the Magazine prison in Colombo demanding the immediate release of Tamil political prisoners.

 


A total of 223 prisoners have joined the strike at jails across four different cities as well, it was reported.

 


Many have been imprisoned under terrorism laws for alleged links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam — a rebel group that waged a 26-year civil war against the Sri Lankan government until its defeat in 2009.

 


The inmates have agreed to discuss the matter with Commissioner General of Prisons Rohana Pushpakumara.
