Sri Lanka’s main opposition, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), says that President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed to provide a solution to the detained LTTE suspects before November 07.
The President had given this assurance during a phone conversation with Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan last evening, a spokesman for the TNA said.
He stated that the President had agreed to provide necessary solutions to all LTTE suspects, who have not been charged with major crimes.
Several Tamil detainees commenced a hunger strike on Monday and have vowed to fast until death to demand their immediate release.
Protests and fasting have also been organised in Colombo, Vavuniya and Jaffna in support of the prisoners.
Around 223 detainees are participating in the campaign inside 14 prisons around the island, including Magazine and Welikada prisons in Colombo and in other places such as Negambo, Monaragala, Anuradhapura, Pollonnaruwa, Batticoloa, Badulla and Kandy.
Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa and representatives of the TNA have visited the protesting inmates on several occasions while discussion are also set to take place at the Magazine Prison later today.
