
President Maithripala Sirisena today appointed two more members to the newly-established National Police Commission, the Presidential Media Unit said.
Senior Administrative Officer Thilak Collure and former IGP Frank de Silva have been appointed to the commission upon recommendation of the Constitutional Council.
Senior Professor of Sociology of the University of Colombo Prof. Siri Hettige was appointed as the Chairman of the Police Commission yesterday (21) while Anton Jayanathan, M.P.H. Manatunga, Savithri Wijesekara and Y.L.M. Zavahir were appointed as members to the Commission.
The National Police Commission has been established with effect from 14th October 2015 under the 19 the amendment to the Constitution.
An independent body, it is vested with powers of appointment, transfers, promotions, control of discipline and dismissal of all ranks of police officers except IGP.
NPC has also powers to entertain and investigate public complaints against police officers or the police force from the public or any aggrieved parties and provide relief to them.
