The new service touched down at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport on Tuesday, following a direct flight from Vienna.
Austrian will serve the route using a twin-aisle Boeing 767 aircraft.
Colombo becomes the airline’s third destination in the Indian Ocean, following Mauritius and the Maldives, and the launch of the new route represents the airline’s renewed focus on long-haul tourist destinations.
“We are the only European airline in the German-speaking region of Europe which flies directly to Colombo. For this reason, we also hope to attract passengers from Germany and Switzerland,” explained Andreas Otto, Austrian’s chief commercial officer.
This winter, Austrian Airlines will fly to five Asian destinations: Colombo, Bangkok, the Maldives, Beijing and Tokyo, as well as Mauritius. And the airline is also planning to launch flights to Shanghai next year. (Courtesy – Travel Daily Media)
