The 39 students who were arrested during yesterday’s HNDA protest at Ward Place have been released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
They were ordered released on personal bails of Rs 100,000 each by Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya, Ada Derana reporter said.
Instructing police to arrest the remaining individuals who were responsible for organizing the protest movement and produce them before the court, the chief magistrate postponed the case till January 08.
Bambalapitiya Police yesterday arrested 39 students including two monks who had engaged in the protest, against making the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy non-equivalent to a degree programme and curtailing the four year programme by one year.
The protesters, who were blocking the road at Ward Place near the University Grants Commission (UGC), were met with tear gas and water cannons as they refused to disperse.
At least 7 students were injured while the police spokesman said that one police officer was injured as a result of the tense situation.
