President Maithripala Sirisena says that a special Cabinet meeting will be held next Wednesday (11) to discuss the controversial Avant-Garde issue. 

Addressing an event in Laggala today, he said that the Cabinet meeting will commence at 10.00am next Wednesday.

President said that he will call the special Cabinet Metting to confer powers to take decisions to conduct investigations on corruption, including the Avant-Garde case in a more correct and transparent manner.

The investigation into the private security firm and the statement made by the Minister of Law and Order Tilak Marapana regarding the issue in Parliament on Wednesday had reportedly sparked heated arguments at the cabinet meeting held yesterday. 

Responding to questions raised by JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Marapana had said the whole controversy surrounding the Avant Garde issue is a result of a lack of understanding regarding the floating armoury and police officers eager to “gain points” with the new government. 

“I think the reason for such confusion is due to the lack of understanding regarding the floating armoury,” he said in parliament, adding, that the raid was carried out by police officer eager to “gain points” with the new government. 

The minister had said that based on findings and reports of the Attorney General’s Department there has been no misconduct on the part of the private security firm.
