
Around 38,000 persons in Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Trincomalee, Puttalam and Gampaha districts have been affected by floods while over 2,600 persons have been displaced, according to the Disaster Management Centre.
Several entry roads to Jaffna are also obstructed owing to the heavy rains.
Many areas in the country have been affected by floods due to heavy rainfall experienced on Sunday. The highest rainfall was recorded in Jaffna during the last 24 hours. The rainfall recorded was 166.3 millimetres.
The rainfall recorded in Trincomalee and Batticaloa were 79.8 millimetres and 54.7 millimetres respectively. Kandy recorded a rainfall of 51.7 mm while Badulla recorded 31 mm, Anuradhapura recorded 28 milometres of rainfall.
The hyperactive well-marked low-pressure area has refused to move out of its perch over Sri Lanka/adjoining South-West Bay of Bengal and continues to pump in moisture in a North-Northeast direction.
