Frontline Socialists Party (FSP) political committee member Premakumar Gunaratnam, who was arrested and remanded for visa violations, has been further remanded till December 11 by the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court.
When Mr Gunaratnam was produced before the court today, defence attorneys requested that he be granted bail.
However, the Kegalle Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis stated that the suspect cannot be relased on bail under the Immigration and Emigration Act.
Therefore pointing out that the case needs to be heard, the magistrate informed that hearings would commence on January 08.
Premakumar, popularly known as Kumar Gunaratnam, was arrested on November 04 by Kegalle Police in the Aguruwella area.
The former JVP politburo member had arrived in Sri Lanka from Australia on January 01, just days before the Presidential Election.
Gunaratnam, who holds Australian citizenship, had arrived in the island on a 30-day tourist visa which expired on January 31 while the Department of Immigration and Emigration had sought his arrest for visa violations.
