The Inspector of Police (IP) attached to the Kirulapona police station, who was interdicted in connection with the attack on protesting HNDA students, has been sent a charge sheet.
Secretary of the National Police Commission (NPC), Ariyadasa Cooray, said that the police officer in question has been informed to show cause with regard to the charge sheet within a month.
The Inspector was interdicted on December 10 based on the recommendations of the National Police Commission, which launched a probe into the police attack on students during a protest staged at Ward Place in Colombo on October 29.
He was reportedly identified as the policeman who attacked and caused injuries to the HNDA student, Sasini Sandeepa.
Mr Cooray said that disciplinary action to be taken against the police officer would be decided after he shows cause with regard to the charge sheet.
However, during the suspension period the Inspector of Police can request for half his wages, he said.
