
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake today said that the government will not allow traders to create a false shortage of essential consumer goods ahead of the festive season and that instruction have been issued take strict measures against them.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he said that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has been instructed to arrest and take action against errant traders ahead of the coming festive season.
Karunanayake said that certain traders are attempting to portray an artificial shortage for goods at some locations.
He also said that the private sector has decided to purchase paddy at Rs 42.
