Members of all fishermen unions met in Rameshwaram today and decided to resort to an indefinite strike from 28 February in front of the Sri Lankan embassy in Chennai demanding release of fishermen and boats seized by the island’s navy.
The unions conducted an urgent meeting to discuss release of Indian fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan jails. During the meet, they decided they would hold an indefinite strike from 28 February in front of the Lankan embassy in Chennai demanding release of fishermen and boats.
Following the arrest of 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy yesterday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi again asking to take action to find a permanent solution to the fishermen issue.
‘There is an urgent and imperative need to proactively initiate an appropriate set of actions that will bring about a permanent solution to the fishermen issue that plagues the livelihoods of thousands of Tamilnadu fishermen,’ the Chief Minister wrote.
She urged the Prime Minister Modi to personally intervene in the matter and direct the Ministry of External Affairs to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan authorities so as to secure the immediate release of 27 fishermen and 71 fishing boats detained in Sri Lanka.
