Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena today urged the government to clarify reasons not to hire a local agent for the proposed India-aided Emergency Ambulance Service which is to be introduced in two provinces here shortly.

The observation was made at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (24).

Parliamentarian Gunawardena said the government is about to seek assistant in this regard through a non-governmental organization (NGO).

“Why they cannot hire a local agent?” Gunawardena said. He also claimed that the service will be provided using 88 ambulances and employing over 600 Indians.

Meanwhile, former Foreign Minister and MP G.L. Peiris while commenting at the press conference slammed the government for turning a blind eye to the fishermen issue.

“The Prime Minister said only ‘traitors’ would oppose the move to sign an economic and technology pact with India. Yet no one steps forward to raise their voice against the Indian fishermen issue,” he said.
