
General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Professor Vishwa Warnapala, has passed away at the age of 79.
The former Cabinet Minister of Higher Education and former Parliamentarian passed away at a private hospital in Colombo, family members confirmed.
Prof. Warnapala was an active member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main coalition partner of the UPFA, since his university days and was appointed to the SLFP Central Committee by Sirimavo Bandaranaike in the 1980s.
He was appointed as the UPFA General Secretary by President Maithripala Sirisena on August 26, 2015 after Susil Premajayantha resigned from the position.
