The Ministry of Defence announced that an amnesty period has been declared from April 25 to May 05 to hand over illegal firearms to the government.
The Defence Ministry has granted an amnesty to those in the possession of unlicensed weapons, to surrender these weapons, with the deadline for the amnesty set for May 05.
On March 30, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi had said that arrangements are in place to offer cash rewards to those willing to hand over illegal firearms.
The move comes in the wake of a recent surge in firearm related criminal activities and a wave of underworld shooting incidents.
