The United National Party (UNP) says that the Joint Opposition is now slowly “dissolving” as its members continue to switch sides and support the national government.
“Even yesterday two (MPs) from the Joint Opposition came to our side and have accepted ministerial portfolios in our government,” Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said, referring to Lakshman Seneviratne and Manusha Nanayakkara who were appointed as State Minister and Deputy Minister respectively.
He stated that back then the members of Joint Opposition had “laughed” about international human rights organizations and that now “they are going to Geneva to complain.”
The Minister of Public Administration and Management stated that more MPs representing the Joint Opposition, a group of predominantly UPFA members supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, are expected to crossover to the government.
He refused to elaborate on names and numbers but said that discussions are ongoing.
Responding to questions from media regarding the controversy surrounding the destruction of a walking path in Wattala and the responsible parties, Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that an investigation should be conducted on the matter and that it is the responsibility of the government.
