The Amnesty period for handing over illegal weapons which came into effect on Monday (25) has received good results, the Defence Ministry said in a statement today (27).
The amnesty period will end on May 06 and during this period persons holding illegal weapons can surrender them to the nearest Divisional Secretariat, District Secretary offices or police stations.
During the amnesty period, persons returning the weapon will not be subjected to any fines for holding such a weapon.

Rs. 5000.00 for a Gun or similar kind (Gal Katas/ Badina Thuwakku)
Rs. 10000.00 for a pistol or revolver
and Rs. 25000.00 for a T-56 weapon will be offered to persons retuning weapons.
A special search operation will be carried out by the police after the end of the Amnesty period to arrest persons holding illegal weapon in their possession.
Issuing a press release State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene requests all those who have in their possession such weapons to use this opportunity and handover illegal weapons and assist the Government to ensure the peace and wellbeing of the society.
