Pevidi Handa calls off scheduled “satyagraha”

A “satyagraha” campaign, which was scheduled to be held over the issue on former President’s security, has been temporary suspended, Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero says.


The observation was made while speaking at a press conference held at the Abeyarama Temple in Narahenpita this afternoon (9).


The Thero added the campaign will be suspended as the President has assured a discussion in this regard with the Pevidi Handa organization.  


Earlier, the organization stated that it would stage an indefinite “satyagraha” in protest over the decision to replace the military security of the former President with police personnel. 


Southern Provincial Councilor Venerable Baddegama Samitha Thera said the satyagraha would be staged at the Dharmapala Park in Galle from May 15. 


Some 50 army personnel assigned for the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa were withdrawn earlier. They were replaced by trained police personnel form the VIP security unit.
