The Irrigation Department says that flood waters have receded in the upper areas of the Kelani River and that while the lower areas of the river continue to remain flooded those water levels are also expected to gradually decrease.

The areas feeding water to the Kelani River had experienced fairly good weather conditions within the past 48 hours, according to Director of Irrigation (Hydrology) Eng. Prema Hettiarachchi.

The water level of the Kelani River at Nagalagam Street has been recorded as 1.71m today (22), a sharp decrease from yesterday’s 2.07m.

The Kelani River water level has been recorded as 6.96m at the Hanwella station and also shows a decrease since yesterday when it was recorded as 8.20m.

Hettiarachchi said that the Irrigation Department is continuously observing the weather conditions and water levels of rivers and that it will notify the public in advance regarding any possible threats.

Meanwhile the Disaster Management Center (DMC) says that flood waters have started to recede in several areas.

However, there are still over 200,000 people who are displaced due to floods in the parts of the country, DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said.
