A decision had to be made to allocate a huge fund to purchase vehicles since usually the MPs utilize luxury cars and they are expensive, Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka says.
The observation was made while responding to a question made by a reporter during a press conference held in Colombo today (08).
“There is no problem with submitting a supplementary estimate to purchase vehicles, because it is a privilege for a MP to acquire a new vehicle after every five years,” he added.
Gayantha Karunathilaka had submitted the supplementary estimate seeking money to purchase vehicles for 30 Ministers, Deputy and State Ministers earlier.
He also pointed out the politicians need to have vehicles in a bid to provide an efficient service to the public.
Minister Rajitha Senaratne while speaking at the press conference added sometimes politicians have to use ‘four wheel vehicles’ while they are required to visit rural areas due to the bad quality of the roads.
