The release of Tamil feature film ‘Porkalathil Oru Poo’ (A Flower in Battlefield) on the alleged murder of a newsreader of LTTE-controlled television in Sri Lanka is still stuck in legal quagmire and the Madras high court has sought to refer it for mediation. It will be held on Monday.
The K Ganeshan-directed film apparently deals with the life of a television journalist, Shoba alias Isaipriya, who anchored programmes on LTTE-run television in Sri Lanka. There are videos claiming that Isaipriya, killed during the last phase of the civil war, was raped and murdered.
After the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused clearance for its screening and the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal upheld the decision, director Ganeshan moved the court seeking permission for public screening of the film. His counsel, S Duraisamy and V Elangovan, argued that the film only portrayed what happened during the Eelam war and that blocking its release would amount to curtailing freedom of expression.
