Former Minister Johnston Fernando and two ex-state officials were granted bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate today in connection with the corruption cases filed by the Bribery Commission.
The former Minister, former Sathosa Chairman Eraj Fernando and its former Working Director Mohammed Fakir were each ordered released on a cash bail of Rs 50,000 and two personal bails of Rs 5 million.
On May 19, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption today filed action against the former Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade for causing loses amounting to Rs. 40.1 million to the government.
According to the commission, the losses were incurred due to the former minister using public servants for political and personal reasons.
Fernando is accused of employing 45 workers of the co-operative wholesale establishment (Sathosa) for his personal and political activities during 2010 and 2014.
In November last year, the Bribery Commission filed 5 cases against former Minister Johnston Fernando for failure to declare assets between 2010 and 2014.
