A committee has been appointed to monitor the prices of essential goods, Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka says.
The observation was made while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (06).
Karunathilaka added the committee was appointed under directives from the President and the Prime Minister due to an ‘unusual’ increase of the prices of essential goods recently.
“We got details that though the VAT is exempted from essential goods, some venders intend to sell it for a higher price,” said Karunathilaka.
He also added that a special force has also been formed to conduct flash raids to monitor store outlets.
“An awareness program will also be launched to create awareness among people about the prices of essential goods,” he added. Karunathilaka also went on to say the Government is looking forward to propose the introduction of deemed input tax in near future.
