
A suspect has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to illegally smuggle gold out of the country.
The 48-year-old, from Katugastota, was arrested by customs officers when he was preparing to board a flight to Mumbai, India.
Almost 600 grams of gold worth around Rs 2.9 million was found cleverly concealed in the suspect’s slippers, according to airport customs.
The gold was forfeited while a penalty of Rs 100,000 was imposed on the suspect.
