Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today extended condolences to the “grief-stricken” French nation in the wake of the Bastille Day terror attack in Nice.
At least 84 died, according to French media, when a truck plowed into a crowd just after a fireworks show in celebration of Bastille Day -- a national holiday and France’s equivalent to July 4.
“Appalled by the cowardly nature of #Nice attack. My condolences are with the grief-stricken French nation,” Sirisena wrote on his Twitter account.
Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has also condemned the attack and called for the world to unite and put an end to such “senseless acts of terror.”
“Strongly condemn the heinous attack in Nice. The world must come together to put an end to these senseless acts of terror,” he wrote on his official Twitter account.
Statements of condolence have poured in from leaders across the globe.
Among those condemning the attack and expressing sympathy for the victims were U.S. President Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, and Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
