Three-member committee to investigate Jaffna Uni. clash

A three-member committee has been appointed to investigate into student clash at the University of Jaffna, said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wasanthi Arsharathnam.

 

She stated that the committee report should be received within two weeks time.

 

The clash which occurred on Saturday (16) also caused the temporary closure of the university for few days.

 

 A media conference was held yesterday (18) at the university to explain the matter. Addressing the briefing, the Vice Chancellor also said that the prevailing situation at the university is peaceful now.

 

Prof. Arsharathnam stated that she held discussions with the two groups who were involved in the clash and also stated that she had a discussion with the deans of faculty at the University.

 

The students also have promised that such conflicts will never occur hereafter, she said.

 

Meanwhile, Minister of National Dialogue Mano Ganeshan said that the Vice Chancellor and the Administration must take the responsibility of the conflict. He also said that such an incident could have been prevented if they had taken necessary action. 

 

The minister stated that he has requested for a report regarding the clash from the police commission and human rights commission. 

 

Meanwhile the national police commission has called for a report on the police action during the clash.

 

The secretary of the commission Ariyadasa Cooray said that the DIG in charge of Jaffna disitrct has been instructed to provide the relevant report.
