Court refuses to issue notice on 11 Joint Opposition MPs

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has rejected a request made by police seeking to issue notice on 11 MPs of the Joint Opposition to appear before courts over the protest staged against the former Central Bank governor disregarding a court order.

Rejecting the police request, Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne stated that the court order issued with regard to the protest against the former Governor Arjuna Mahendran was not properly conveyed to the relevant individuals.

She pointed out that announcing via loudspeakers cannot be considered as a proper way to notify a court decision and that it should be personally hand delivered.

Therefore the magistrate refused to issue notice on MPs Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Johnston Fernando, Wimal Weerawansa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Prasanna Ranatunga, mahindananda Aluthgamage, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Shriyani Wijewickrama, Namal Rajapaksa, Ranjith de Soysa and Bandula Gunawardena who staged a protest representing the Joint Opposition.
