Heavy traffic congestion has been reported in the Town Hall area in Colombo as the protest march by the ‘Joint Opposition’ is currently passing the Hyde Park Grounds and traveling towards Lipton Circus (de Soysa Circus), Colombo.
The protest march will culminate with a rally at Lipton Circus, according to members of the Joint Opposition.
Dubbed ‘Jana Satana Pada Yatra’, the march commenced from Peradeniya on Thursday (July 28) with the participation of MPs representing the group and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The final rally was scheduled to be held at Hyde Park Grounds in Colombo today (Aug 01), however the reservations of the venue was cancelled due to repairs being carried out.
Authorities had agreed to provide Campbell Park, Colombo as an alternative venue to host the meeting but the leaders of the Joint Opposition had turned them down.
