Import tax on Big Onions has been increased from Rs 25 to 40 per kg with immediate effect, the Finance Ministry said.
The decision was made amid pressure from local onion farmers to halt the import of onions. Farmers across the country were facing hardship as a result of receiving low prices for the big onions they have cultivated, it was reported.
