Pune Police begin process to deport Lankan

The Pune police on Friday initiated the process of deporting a Sri Lankan national who was detained at Lohegaon airport on Thursday for allegedly using a fake Indian passport to fly to Germany.

A police official requesting anonymity said, “The foreigners’ registration office on a request made by the Airport police has issued a restriction order to prevent Suthan Suppiah, 37, from leaving Pune. We have kept Suthan under observation at the police station lock-up as a preventive measure to prevent him from escaping.”

The official said, “We have informed the Sri Lankan embassy and requested them to issue a temporary passport to deport him next week. We have sent a message to all states’ police to find out if he has committed any offence in India.”

Investigations have revealed that Suthan had tampered with the passport of Marimuthu Raju of Alangottal in Tamil Nadu and pasted his photograph.

He was detained by the Intelligence Bureau at the airport on suspicion before he could board a flight to Frankfurt in Germany on Thursday morning.

No complaint of cheating and forgery was registered against him as senior police officials took a call to deport him, the official added.
