The Joint Opposition is not in a position to join hands with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as long as it opens to an alliance with the United National Party (UNP), former President Mahinda Rajapaksa says.
The observation was made while he was speaking to reporters at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (05).
He pointed out the policies of the SLFP and the UNP are not meant to be together and that was the reason why S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike in the first place intended to split from his party and form a new one.
“They have betrayed the party today,” Rajapaksa said.
He also went on to say the UNP has not accepted the policies of the SLFP. “However, our party has become a follower of the UNP,” Rajapaksa added.
President Maithripala Sirisena while speaking at the 65th Convention of the SLFP yesterday urged all the members of the SLFP to join hands with them in a bid to further strengthen the party.
Rajapaksa also dubbed as “one against the government” the attack on Sri Lankan envoy in Malaysia who was mobbed by a group of protesters allegedly linked to the LTTE for hosting him.
“This is not good for the country, it was an attack against the government,” Rajapaksa said.
“I am prepared to face this kind of threats as I finished the decades old terrorist campaign in this country,” he added.
