SC orders compensation for farmers affected by Uma Oya project

The Supreme Court today ordered the Uva Province Director of Agriculture to compensate the farmers whose crops were affected as a result of the Uma Oya project.
The decision was taken when a petition submitted by the Centre for Environmental Justice and a group of farmers from Bandarawela was taken up taken up before a three-member judge bench chaired by Chief Justice K. Sripavan.
Accordingly, the farmers whose crops were affected by the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project were instructed to submit applications to the Provincial Director of Agriculture as the compensation would be decided based on the applications.
