Customs officers who had retired between 2014 and 2016 have been recalled for service immediately for a period of one year on contract basis, the Director General of Customs Chulananda Perera said.
Customs operations have been disrupted to a great extent as a result of the work-to-rule campaign launched by the Customs Trade Union Alliance since Monday demanding the withdrawal of the proposed new Customs Ordinance Draft Bill.
The Unions also organised a protest opposite the Customs Headquarters in Colombo.
Eight trade unions including the Customs Executive Officers Union, Customs Superintendents Union, All Sri Lanka Customs Services Union and Customs Inspectors Union had joined hands to implement the trade union action.
