The Ministry of Power and Energy says that electricity tariffs will not be increased under any circumstances.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka usually receives the tariff proposal by Ceylon Electricity Board and reviews it in accordance with tariff methodology and government policies.
Electricity Generation, Electricity Transmission and distribution are the main component that contributes to the tariff. Apart to that, the costs of the industry activities are taken into account in determining electricity tariffs.
As the cost of electricity generation is forecasted to increase between October 2016 and March 2017 due to special circumstances such as dry weather conditions, the CEB had notified the PUC of a 5% tariff increase as a solution to the increase in cost.
However, the final policy decision with this regard rests with the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. The Public Utilities Commission has inquired from the ministry regarding the matter while the ministry has notified that electricity tariffs will not be increased under any circumstances.
