Just four days ahead of the meeting between Indian Foreign Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, and Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister, Mangala Samaraweera, the Navy has arrested four Indian fishermen near Jaffna this morning.
Indian fishermen and Sri Lankan fishermen will meet on Wednesday to discuss issues fishermen are facing. After this meeting, on November 5, under the leadership of the Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister, 10 Sri Lankan fishermen will meet Sushma Swaraj. This is the fourth round of talks the two countries will have regarding this issue.
The Tamil Nadu fishermen have been facing major crisis because of the continuous arrests in the Indian Ocean that they have been subjected to. They have been continuously requesting the central government to intervene and bring an amicable solution in the Katchatheevu issue. Since 2012, after the third round of talks between the two countries, more than 2,800 arrests have been made and at present 9 fishermen including the 4 arrested today are under arrest in Sri Lanka.
