Over 2,200 people were killed in road accidents so far this year

Sri Lanka recorded its highest number of road fatalities last year with 2,817 people killed, according to police statistics.
In the first nine months of this year, a total of 2,202 people were killed in 2,085 road accidents. Police statistics also show that the country is on its way to record about 70,000 accidents for this year.
The statistics point to an alarming increase in the number of serious accidents reported to police along with the number of people who suffer grievous injuries in addition to the high number of deaths, the Finance Ministry said in a statement today.
Government hospitals have been treating tens of thousands of road accident victims at a huge cost to the tax payers.
