The retired disabled soldier, who sustained an eye injury during the recent protest near the Presidential Secretariat, is to be flown overseas on consultant recommendations, Military Spokesman Brigadier A.W.M.P Roshan Seneviratne said.
Issuing a statement, he said that Lance corporal YKDN Mahiraj’s treatment was sponsored by the Sri Lanka Army and that he was under the care of specialist doctors from the Colombo Eye Hospital and the Military Hospital.
According to the recommendations of the specialist doctors treating him, the Sri Lanka Army will take steps to provide necessary treatment for the retired soldier at a hospital overseas if required.
The lance corporal was among several disabled tri-forces and police personnel who were protesting near the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on November 7 demanding pension benefits for disabled veterans who have not completed 12 years of service. The protesters were met with tear gas and water cannons.
