Ministry to ban teachers from accepting gifts from students

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam today said that a new circular will be issued prohibiting school teachers from receiving gifts from students or collecting money on various occasions, starting next year.
He pointed out that collecting money from students in that manner poses a threat to the right of free education and that this move is aimed at preventing any undue mental pressure on school children.
Speaking during an event at a school in Kuliyapitiya, the minister said that the decision was taken after considering the sensitive requests received from parents.
