Private bus operators have decided to call their strike action after President Maithripala Sirisena has assured them a meeting to discuss their issues.
Trade unions say that the strike was temporarily called off as the president has given them a meeting today (03) for discussions.
Private bus operators engaged in a strike yesterday protesting the government’s decision to increase the fine on certain traffic offences to Rs 25,000.
Several taxi drivers and rickshaw drivers also protested yesterday over the hike. The strike had forced the state-run transport company to deploy an additional 1,000 vehicles while the railways had also operated extra trains.
However, commuters were seen left stranded at bus stops across the country and severely inconvenienced due to the lack of buses yesterday.
